China on Thursday urged the United States to immediately cancel its latest tariffs and vowed countermeasures to safeguard its own interests, after President Donald Trump declared sweeping levies on all U.S. trading partners around the world. The Government fears Ireland will be swept up in a worldwide recession after US president Donald Trump announced a series of reciprocal tariffs on countries around the globe. Mr Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement slapped a 20pc tariff on goods being exported from the EU to the US. He also announced a 25pc tariff on all cars being imported to the US from midnight last night. Pharmaceuticals, of which Ireland is a major exporter, will not be subject to the reciprocal tariffs at this point.
