With their squeaky, succulent leaves, it’s no wonder hostas are seen as five-star hotels by slugs and snails. In a damp spring, the marauding molluscs await their moment, honing to perfection their rasping mouthparts so that they can make unbelievable inroads during the space of a single soggy evening. This year, we had a dry start to spring and many hostas managed that crucial spearing of the soil with their tightly scrolled leaves unfurling in pristine condition.

Last week’s celebrations got me thinking how Easter is a special time in the garden, regardless of one’s religious affiliations. Nowhere is the power of resurrection felt more acutely than on a patch of earth where new shoots shrug off their winter dormancy and burst into life. The sap rises in humans, as well as in plants, and even those who garden only seasonally — from April to September — are overtaken by that feeling of sublime restlessness.

A monk I used to know — tall, slender, bearded and bespectacled with a fine line in asceticism — used to refer frequently to what he called ‘the postponement of gratification’. Being a monk it was, I suppose, understandable. He led a life devoted to prayer — the gratification being that offered when he was called to Heaven. As a gardener, I could sympathise. I am, after all, planting things that take time to mature.
