The Catholic Church elected a new pope this morning after more than a day of voting. One church in Chico is celebrating the news. Robert Prevost, 69, and cardinal from Chicago, was elected as the 267th pope. He followed Pope Francis’s papacy, who died earlier last month. Prevost has chosen the papal name of Leo XIV. He's the first ever American pope in the history of the church. In Chico, Our Divine Savior Catholic Church is happy about the news.

As tariffs begin taking effect, North State manufacturing businesses are being invited to a virtual workshop next week to discuss concerns and resources. It’s called “North State Manufacturers: Navigating Tariff Impacts Together” and it’s hosted by Grow Manufacturing Initiative, a group that works to strengthen manufacturing in the region.

A growing concern over unhoused residents creating hazards by using open flame equipment has the Chico City Council tonight deciding what to do about open-flame cooking and warming equipment in areas that are vulnerable to fire. Chico Fire Chief Steve Standridge is requesting an emergency ordinance banning the use of devices like barbecues, fireplaces and stoves in public spaces. Standridge says more than 100 fires were started by unhoused people this year.

The Paradise Animal Shelter is closed for remodeling this week and its operations have temporarily moved to the police department. Staff say they’ll check email and phones regularly and reply as quickly as possible. Some dogs are being temporarily lodged with the Butte Humane Society. Others are in foster homes. Dog licenses are still available at the police department Tuesday through Saturday, or at city hall Monday through Thursday.

Lower elevation areas of the Sacramento Valley and foothills are at an elevated risk of fire through Monday. Risk levels in Chico, Redding, Yuba City and surrounding areas have risen slightly, from “little or no risk” to “low risk” of fire. The Shasta Fire Safe Council says dry air and grasses are increasing the chance of large wildfires north of Sacramento. The council recommends people spend this weekend removing dry vegetation from their properties.
