Some optometrists are concerned they’ve already noticed patients delaying or avoiding appointments since Alberta suddenly reduced its eye-care coverage in February. “It was something we were blindsided with,” said Dr. Cristy Franco, president-elect of the Alberta Association of Optometrists (AAO). The Airdrie-based optometrist said there was no consultation with doctors prior to the change. “We want to make sure Albertans can access the care they need,” said Franco.

Rallies are set to take place throughout Alberta on Tuesday, primarily in protest of a recent move by the province to not pass along the new federal Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) to recipients of Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH). Two-dozen advocacy groups signed an open-letter to Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon calling on them to reconsider the decision.

For the third year in a row, Alberta broke the record for the highest death toll due to influenza in recent history. “There has been kind of a concerning theme of more severe years back to back to back,” said Lynora Saxinger, University of Alberta infectious diseases specialist. Alberta recorded 193 deaths due to influenza so far in the 2024-25 season. Two strains hit Alberta this season—H1N1 and H3N2.
