It is grey, windy and drizzling rain as Joanna Moss and her partner, Andy, load up on sandbags at Macleay Island, one of the first pieces of land predicted to face the punch of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The cyclone is still a day or two away, but already the water is coming up high on the mangroves as the tide rises. They have temporarily shut their 8th Sense Kitchen, which sells everything from gelato to pastries, as the wild weather threatens to bear down.

Former Queensland deputy premier Jackie Trad's "aggressive advocacy" saw the appointment of a top bureaucrat who was deemed "not appointable" by an independent panel, a report has found. An investigation by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) into Ms Trad was tabled in parliament on Wednesday evening. The report related to the independent recruitment process of a former under treasurer — the chief executive of Queensland Treasury — which began in 2018.

Queensland's budget will plunge deeper into the red, with surpluses previously forecast by the former Labor government eroded into deep deficits. The new LNP Treasurer David Janetzki will today hand down the Mid-Year Fiscal and Economic Review (MYFER) — promising to reveal "hidden" cost blowouts and "unfunded" services. The update will show the $887 million surplus for 2026-27 that Labor had initially projected in their last budget will now be a deficit of more than $9 billion.

Queensland's new LNP government has accused the former Labor administration of lying to the community about the cost and viability of a huge pumped hydro scheme, branding it a "con job" and "hoax". Premier David Crisafulli has followed through on his election commitment to scrap Labor's Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project, slated for an area west of Mackay, in north Queensland.
