JENSEN BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — A suspected burglar attempted to break into a series of homes in Martin County before he came face-to-face with a couple who would take matters, and a weapon, into their own hands. 46-year-old Jonathan Richards was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to break into a condo in Jensen Beach. Seconds later, the homeowners, Lisa and Chris, would wake up, coming face to face with, in Lisa’s words, the devil.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) – A black bear was caught hanging out in a tree for the majority of the school day near Seminole County. After eight or nine hours of sniffing and watching, a juvenile black bear carefully climbed down from a tree near a middle school moments before a reporter’s live shot Monday night. Parents and students kept a safe distance at all times. Kelly Mocorro says she got an early morning text from the school but did not realize how close it was.

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) — Save a swamp. Sauté a nutria. Wildlife officials are proposing a special way of dealing with an invasive species wreaking havoc on Florida’s natural reserves. The nutria, also known as a water rat, is a large, semi-aquatic rodent native to South America. According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the rodents are considered an invasive species.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WSVN) – It was a gem of a find for one worker sifting through piles of debris left behind in areas hit by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Joe Kovach, an engineering inspector with Pinellas County Public Works, oversees hurricane debris collection at a site near Tampa. He said that while searching a big pile from Hurricane Helene, a contractor found a treasure. It was a small black box with a ring inside. “It truly is incredible,” said Kovach.
