Was there ever a moment during the furore over Cop Killer when you were feeling the heat and/or questioning yourself over releasing it? I never really questioned myself, but the heat came when they started sending bomb threats to Warner Bros. I threw the rock, that’s my heat. But when other people could get hurt, that’s nerve-racking. But I got news for people: anybody that thinks controversy is a way to make money, it’s not. You get a lot of buzz, but now you need lawyers.

A strange shift seems to have occurred in the world of Oranssi Pazuzu. While the Finns’ unique blend of black metal, psychedelia and kosmische music could never rightly be called normal, album number six sees them pressing ever further into the unknown, and not much caring who follows. The band’s sound was built on impeccable riffcraft and Jun-His’s wonderfully blackened goblin gurgles, which were then imbued with meditative qualities demanding deep, uninterrupted listening.

Sex Swing resurface much like a dubious stain that refuses to be scrubbed from your best pair of trousers. As with said stain, they’re greasy, flaky at the edges and smell a bit funny – gross, yes, but also arousing the aberrant urge to give them a little lick when no one else is looking.

Many bands don’t survive the death of a band member, let alone a brother. That Endon have made it back at all after the passing of noise artist Etsuo Nagura is heartening. With their fourth album, Fall Of Spring, they continue to stun, startle and surprise. While earlier releases like Mama and Through The Mirror saw the band smash together noise, metal and hardcore to form a sort of fragmentary avant-grindcore; Fall Of Spring sees them recalibrate entirely.

Rising nu metal stars Vended have announced their self-titled debut album. The band – featuring vocalist Griffin Taylor and Simon Crahan, sons of Slipknot members Corey Taylor and Shawn “Clown” Crahan – will self-release the record on September 20. Vended have also announced a string of North American dates for the autumn, with support coming from Wristmeetrazor and Lie. The tour will follow Vended’s US run with Slipknot and Knocked Loose in September.
