With the season upon us, all eyes are on 2025 and the young Bucs. 2024 saw moments of hope — headlined by the reigning National League Rookie of the Year and MLB The Show 25 cover athlete Paul Skenes and statcast record-breaker Oneil Cruz. While these two were in their own world, the rest of the Pirates were, well, playing mediocre baseball. But 2025 should look different.

12:35 am My, how the mighty have fallen. The Pittsburgh Steelers were the pinnacle of stability for a decade and a half. Ben Roethlisberger left no doubt that he was the starter until his retirement after the 2021 season. Since then, the Steelers have turned into a quarterback carousel. The Steelers thought they found their succession plan in 2022 when they drafted Kenny Pickett in the first round. But the story of drafting the Pitt kid to captain the Steelers was too good to be true.

We can all agree that the 2024 season was a disappointment for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Coming off a 2023 season that saw them go 76-86, the Pirates were rolling into last season with a healthy Oneil Cruz, a much-improved bullpen — on paper, anyway — and young stars filling out their starting rotation.

When Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby snuck his shootout winner past Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008, he capped off a historic day in the National Hockey League. For just the second time in league history — and the first time in the United States — the NHL hosted a hockey game outdoors, played on a rink constructed in the middle of a football field that was dubbed the inaugural “Winter Classic.” It was a smashing success for the NHL.

December 5, 2024 When the Pittsburgh Pirates released their list of players who were tendered contracts for 2025, some notable names weren’t on it. Along with outfielder Connor Joe and relief pitcher Hunter Stratton, the team decided to let right fielder Bryan De La Cruz walk. De La Cruz was one of three trade additions Pirates general manager Ben Cherington made last season, along with utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa and lefty reliever Jalen Beeks.

Wide receiver Ben Skowronek hasn’t had it easy during the last year. A former seventh-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, Skowronek had the luck of getting drafted by the team that would win the Super Bowl that year. Despite his modest contributions of 13 total catches for 145 yards, Skowronek earned himself a Super Bowl ring with the Rams. It wasn’t until his sophomore season that he started to show some chops as a wide receiver.

As students walk around Pitt’s campus, most don’t realize the history they are standing on. The campus is home to some of the richest baseball history in the United States. Though not much remains of the historic Forbes Field park, any Pitt student or visitor can find treasures of what once was. Today, the home plate used in the field’s final game rests in Posvar Hall, and the left-center and center field brick walls along with the flagpole, remain in their original locations.

For some, the start of finals week means spending hours upon hours studying for exams and working on projects, pulling all-night cram sessions and drinking enough caffeine to drown an elephant. For Pitt’s student-athletes, this period marks the end of their regular seasons of play — when they examine the fruits of their labors of the last few months.
