Young women have something now that was not even comprehensible 52 years ago, when Title IX was initially passed — they have women role models in sports. These young women can go to a sporting event at Pitt and see athletes like junior opposite hitter Olivia Babcock play volleyball in front of sellout crowds and say to themselves, “I can do that someday.” This isn’t something that has always been possible.

Pitt men’s basketball’s (16-12, 7-10 ACC) season remains on life support. Without an improbable ACC tournament run, the Panthers will watch March from their couches once again. Fans may question the point of these final games with a seemingly inevitable postseason outcome. In actuality, these games become far more important for different reasons — the future health of the program depends on them. If the team “quits” over these last few games, why would any transfer buy into the program?

Thursday afternoon, Pitt baseball (5-2, ACC 0-0) hosted its home opener at Charles L. Cost Field but fell 7-3 to Bucknell (4-3, Patriot League 0-0). After starting the season with a promising 5-0 record and sweeping Eastern Michigan in their opening weekend series, the Panthers have dropped two games in a row and show significant room for improvement if they hope to challenge the talented ACC field this spring.

As a result, much of their college career is centered around their commitment to athletics, with a varsity bag or electric scooter to signify their status. But without the staple of a Pitt-administered backpack, it’s easy to miss the student-athletes on campus who compete at a similar caliber but lack the varsity title.

Winter sports are preparing for their final stretch of regular season games while spring sports prepare for regular season play. SoftballPitt softball (8-7,0-0 ACC) heads to Long Beach, California, to kick off spring break and compete in the Louisville Slugger Invitational. The tournament starts Friday, Feb.
