COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — Columbia City Council is getting closer to repealing its ordinance banning "conversion therapy" for LGBTQ+ youth. The vote was 4-3 on a first reading to strike down the ordinance Tuesday evening. Tuesday's vote comes after the council deferred the decision on May 28, opting to postpone it to a later date. The vote follows a formal demand from South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who has called on the city to rescind the ordinance.

According to the Department of Justice, a federal grand jury in Greenville returned a 10-count indictment against May. According to court records, in April 2024, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip from the messaging app Kik. The app had flagged several videos shared by the user “joebidennnn69” for containing child sexual abuse.
