Horror as a genre is undoubtedly indebted to its scores and soundtracks, with many going on to influence music outside of film. While some films use extravagant and complex scores, others opt for minimal audio or even complete silence. Both of which have an equally chilling effect. As an avid horror fan, I’m always paying close attention to the music and the role it plays in striking fear in its audience.

On 27 October 2023, exactly nine years after the original album dropped, Taylor Swift released her fourth re-recording, this time of her fifth studio album 1989 and it’s been a long time coming (pun absolutely intended). This re-release was hinted at for some time, with fans suspecting that it was in the works after ‘Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)’ was dropped in November 2021, before Red (Taylor’s Version) came out.

I’ve never liked the works of Roald Dahl. To some this is borderline blasphemous, yet his distinct approach with an iconic visual style (pioneered by Quentin Blake), memorable characters and intense tonal shifts has never appealed. However, my opinion of Wes Anderson is almost antithetical – a filmmaker with a beautiful visual style, effective characters and intense tonal shifts which effortlessly flick between comedy and tragedy.

When I heard that Blur had released their new album The Ballad of Darren this July, I did not rush to listen to it. Perhaps understandably, I thought they would have ‘lost’ something of what they were, or would be trying to recreate something that was lost to the chaos of the nineties. But eventually, after seeing it had been positively received, I wanted to see if it was any good.

Its addictive camp energy and iconic theme song have cemented it as the definitive game to film adaptation (let’s not talk about Mortal Kombat: Annihilation). In recent times, however, this trend has resurfaced. Though with far greater results - both Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie having enjoyed great financial success.
