Growing up just outside of Tampa in Brandon, Florida, USF alumna Felicia Sablan said she’d always had a desire to work in sports. After graduating from USF in 2017 with a mass communications degree, Sablan was able to live out her dream. She’s now the manager of production operations for Amalie Arena’s Vinik Sports Group and works with the Lightning. “I have lasting relationships with the people who impacted my time at USF, some of whom I still work with now,” Sablan said.

When anthropology professor Erin Kimmerle was approached by Hillsborough officials to research unmarked burial grounds in the county, she saw an opportunity to reconnect Tampa with its forgotten history. “There’s a lot of towns today that are either ghost towns or absorbed into Tampa and don’t exist anymore,” she said. “But those places used to be their own communities.

At the most recent creative writer’s club workshop, the space where the group normally meets was overflowing. It seems unusual that a new club could find such rapid growth, but for junior and club president Ariana Matondo, a group like this has been a long time coming. “Having more people come in, that’s when it really hit us that ‘Oh, we’re gonna have to get another room because we have so many people interested in the club,’” she said.

When asked to name a woman who inspires you, one may have a difficult time narrowing it down. But for Sisters Inspiring Success President Patricia Brutus, she sees a woman who is not yet there, an open space she wants to see filled. “When you don’t see people who look like you in leadership roles, that can be discouraging for some people,” she said.
