USF has assembled a task force to promote “efficiency, transparency and strategic reinvestment” among university departments and staff. The team will be responsible for managing Florida State Department of Governmental Efficiency requests at USF, according to public records obtained by The Oracle. Gov. Ron DeSantis the Florida DOGE in February to “identify and eliminate unnecessary spending, programs, courses, staff and any other inefficiencies” in state universities.

The USF Faculty Senate called on USF leadership to withdraw University Police from an agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that will allow campus police to enforce immigration laws. During a special Faculty Senate meeting on Friday, senators expressed concerns over how USF’s international community – faculty and students alike – would be affected by the agreement, which has not yet taken effect.

Peter Alspaugh, Abdul-Malik Zekri, Benjamin Barrera-Altuna and Taylor Rand received the Barry Goldwater Scholarship this year. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE/UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDAAbdul-Malik Zekri said he was “freaking out” during the application process for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, which supports students pursuing a career in research. Zekri, 19, was one of 441 students nationwide chosen to receive the scholarship this year.

Faculty Senate Vice President Scott Perry said he can’t “get a hold of” USF President Rhea Law to learn her stance on the rumored Sarasota-Manatee and New College of Florida merger. “I’ve always found Rhea Law to make the right statement at the right time, but she’s not being available to talk,” Perry said. “I’m not sure that anybody can really find out what she’s thinking.”Perry said he has a “gorgeous” relationship with Law and has tried to reach her — but heard nothing back.

USF’s spring music festival, Bullstock, was cut short during the headlining set by indie rock band Grouplove on Friday night. Rain fell sporadically during the band’s performance, but the festival was called off when it started raining consistently — an hour before the originally scheduled 11:15 p.m. end time. This was met with the audience booing and students rushing out of the event to escape the rain and cold combo.

The Bulls dropped another weekend series, showing familiar problems with South Florida’s bullpen and stranding base runners. South Florida (7-7) buried themselves in a hole early Saturday and failed to punch in runs on Sunday. The Bulls stranded 12 runners on Saturday and again in the rubber match against Villanova. Coach Mitch Hannahs said, at this point in the season, he’s looking for improvements.

Four Tampa campus Student Government (SG) gubernatorial tickets shared their ideas on Wednesday’s debate. They highlighted how they would help fund student organizations and advocate for the student body. Four tickets are running in the Tampa campus gubernatorial election:Emma Goodwin, a biomedical sciences major, is running for governor alongside Ethan Walsh, an industrial engineering major, as prospective lieutenant governor.

USF President Rhea Law’s resignation announcement sparked mixed reactions among the USF community. Law sent out a universitywide email on Monday saying she will step down from her role after a “national search” for a new leader is run. “The time is right for the next president to lead a new chapter of our university,” Law said in the email. Some are thinking ahead about what qualities USF’s next president should have, while others are reflecting on Law’s impact on the university.

From the possibility of a universitywide one-hour block with no classes to concerns around freedom of speech, Monday’s Student Government presidential debate discussed the USF community’s future. The hour-and-a-half debate in the Marshall Student Center’s Oval Theater featured two tickets. A third ticket, which has not been announced, is also running in the elections but did not attend since participation was optional.
