It began with a twig. On the workshop floor of Lasvit’s glassworks in Novy Bor, Czechia, renowned French designer Patrick Jouin picked up a small branch and placed a torn sheet of paper over it. He wondered, ‘What if this simple object could become a light?’ It was a moment of curiosity that sparked a series of experiments and eventually led to ‘Vera’ – a sculptural glass pendant with the appearance of bark.

Sometimes you come across a design so unusual in its appearance that you question how it came to be. In RF Studio’s Mapa de Suelos ('Soil Map') – a series of 13 experimental stone tables launched today (17 April 2025) by the Lima-based art and architecture practice – different types of stone appear to melt into each other, making a material associated with solidity feel almost fluid.

Milan Design Week 2025 was packed with ‘fashion meets furniture’ moments – many of them big, ostentatious, and trailed by hour-long queues that wrapped around the block. One quieter, but no less compelling, installation was tucked away in a space off the rooftop terrace of Villa Bagatti as part of the Alcova 2025 showcase.

The artist behind the Canada Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale, Kiwanga often incorporates fabrics into her installations – including some made by Kvadrat – but this year marks her first foray into textile design itself.

Descend the inconspicuous stairwell outside of Milan’s public pool, Piscina Cozzi (designed by Luigi Secchi in the 1930s), during Milan Design Week 2025 and you’ll discover a hidden jewel of an exhibition. Arranged across the building’s dimly lit basement, tucked into rows of old shower stalls – spaces that have long since fallen into disrepair – are exquisite lighting, furniture and objects made from Murano glass.
