The pharmacy in UMSU University Centre will close at the end of this month. The closure of the pharmacy was announced in October. Ahmed Hasan, a third year student at the University of Manitoba, said the pharmacy in University Centre was the primary pharmacy that they used, and it has been reliable resource for him since he lives on campus.

Dozens lined up outside the UMSU council chambers waiting to attend the most recent UMSU board meeting on March 28 which saw deliberation on motion 0604, a proposal for UMSU to adopt the Arab Canadian Lawyer’s Association’s (ACLA) definition of anti-Palestinian racism. The line extended around the hall, but a sign on the room’s door stated it had a capacity of 75, including UMSU board and staff, meaning only some of those waiting gained entry to the meeting itself.

The U of M board of governors approved Michael Benarroch’s second term as university president on March 20. Initially selected as the university’s president in 2020, Benarroch’s second term is set to begin July 2025. “We have a really exciting future here in the next five years,” Benarroch said.

A motion to adopt the Canadian Arab Lawyers’ Association’s (CALA) definition of anti-Palestinian racism was brought forward during the most recent UMSU board meeting on March 14. The motion was referred to the governance committee to be voted on at a later date. The motion was brought forward by Roleen Alarab, a Palestinian student at the U of M who provides external communications for Students for Justice in Palestine.

The Social Work Students’ Association (SWSA) held a rally in front of Elizabeth Dafoe library last Wednesday in response to concerns raised by group members regarding accessibility. During a recent SWSA meeting, the group’s accessibility representative raised the issues of people without passes parking in accessible parking stalls on campus, and stairs and railings on campus being inaccessible due to snow.

Indigenous students at the University of Manitoba can apply to the Indigenous summer student internship program on March 8. René Ouellette, who is Inuit, is the associate vice president (human resources) at the U of M. The program, ISSIP, began in 2018.

VICE PRESIDENT UNIVERSITY AFFAIRSRachhvir Dhaliwal, a third-year political studies student, is running unopposed for the newly created position of vice president university affairs. Dhaliwal said she is running for this position to make sure that student voices at the U of M are “heard and valued.” Dhaliwal said she has heard concerns in conversation with peers over the past years, and that if elected, she will prioritize finding solutions for these concerns.

Doreen Pendgracs, founder of Chocolatour, gave a presentation at the University Women’s Club (UWC) last Friday to “educate, entertain and entice chocolate lovers to explore the world through chocolate.”The event featured a talk by Pendgracs, author of the 2014 book Chocolatour: A Quest for the World’s Best Chocolate, a lunch and chocolate samples.

An exhibition featuring the experiences of southeast Asian refugees curated by a professor from Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is currently featured in the Manitoba Museum’s Festival Hall. Run by the Hearts of Freedom project, the exhibition, entitled Hearts of Freedom: Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees, focuses on refugees to Canada during the 1970s and 80s. The Hearts of Freedom project was founded by members of the Vietnamese community in Canada.
