The Manitoba government released details of its budget last Tuesday, including the allocation of $43 million “to support post-secondary students training for their careers,” as well as funding increases for Manitoba Student Aid, scholarships and bursaries. The province will also open over 40 new child-care facilities located in schools and post-secondary institutions. UMSU president Tracy Karuhogo said the recently elected NDP government has been receptive to consultation with the student union.

UMSU vice president finance and operations Vaibhav Varma publicly resigned during a March 28 UMSU board meeting. The board meeting featured presentations on motion 0604, a motion to adopt a definition of anti-Palestinian racism, although it is not confirmed whether the meeting’s events were a factor in Varma’s resignation. Varma made his announcement to the board after a recess that was called in response to board of directors chairperson Elbethel Masresha leaving the meeting.

The University of Winnipeg will delay the end of classes and its exam period following a cyberattack that disabled the school’s networks, leading to the temporary cancellation of classes just weeks before exams were originally scheduled to occur. The school announced that its academic year will be extended by a week during a virtual town hall last Wednesday. Classes will now end on April 12 and exams will run from April 18 to May 8.

Haneen Nakhleh and Belkis Elmoudi attended Bassem Eid’s talk on campus last Monday. Before even walking into the room, they felt unwelcome. When Nakhleh, her sister Ronia and Elmoudi — who had all registered for the event prior — tried to enter the event, they said campus security had asked if they had registered three separate times. Nakhleh remembers a security guard asking the three women if they were going to “cause any problems.” Elmoudi noted that all three wore hijabs.

Former dean of U of M’s faculty of law Jonathan Black-Branch was disbarred and fined $36,000 last month for misappropriating more than half a million dollars of university money in a series of expenses the Manitoba Law Society described as fraudulent. A Law Society of Manitoba disciplinary panel decision in December found that Black-Branch misappropriated university funds to pay for accommodations, meals, education and travel expenses while he was dean at Robson Hall.
