NORTH CHANNEL—After much discussion and debate, council for the Northeast Town approved a site-specific zoning amendment that would see a portion of a popular North Channel island able to act as a commercial venue for weddings and other day activities.

NORTH CHANNEL—A Louisa Island anchorage and popular beach among locals was on the agenda during the April 22 meeting of Northeast Town council last week as a proposed zoning amendment sought to have the designation changed from residential to commercial for this North Channel location. He hopes to create a daytime venue for events such as weddings. Louisa Island is close to the North Shore and almost 20 kilometre from the Port of Little Current.
Water rates rise another 4 percent in Little Current, Sheguiandah

NORTHEAST TOWN—Residents of Little Current and Sheguiandah who utilize water and sewer services from the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands will be hit with another four percent increase in 2025. CAO Dave Williamson told council that it is “very difficult” to find ways to generate savings from the two water systems because so much of the costs are out of the municipality’s direct control. “We need to provide safe drinking water,” Mr. Williamson said simply.
NEMI Fire Department to gain new fire pumper truck

NORTHEAST TOWN—The Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands will be getting a brand new fire pumper truck, hopefully by the end of the summer. At its February 20 committee of the whole meeting, council reviewed two quotes for a new pumper truck. Dependable Emergency Vehicles offered a quote for a Freightliner M2 four-door cab and chassis, 1,000-gallon tank with a DD8 6 cyl.
$10 million increase in MPAC assessment for NEMI lowers tax rates for 2025 budget

NORTHEAST TOWN—Since the story for 2025 Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands budget appeared in the December 23, 2024 edition of this newspaper, the municipality received a substantial increase in its Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) rates for 2025—to the tune of $10 million—significantly lowering the tax rates for the year.

PORT OF LITTLE CURRENT—The esteemed Great Lakes Cruising Club (GLCC) is hosting its 60th anniversary Rendezvous in the Port of Little Current from July 13-17, 2025. The prestigious event is being organized by chairs Jib and Debby Turner of Little Current. Ms. Turner told The Expositor the GLCC is pleased to have its diamond rendezvous in Little Current as the port holds a special place in the history of the organization, which is made up of both Canadian and American boaters.

OTTAWA—Kenjgewin Teg in M’Chigeeng, along with the First Nations Technical Institute (which is located in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory near Deseronto in eastern Ontario) has partnered with Ottawa’s Carleton University to offer a one-year Journalism in Indigenous Communities Certificate that is expected to be up and running by the fall of 2025.

MANITOULIN—Island municipalities received some welcome news from the province this week. The annual Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) will see a substantial jump in funds for 2025—so much so that it will cover the shortfall caused by the huge increase in Ontario Provincial Police billings costs revealed to municipalities last month.

Community Services Officer (CSO) Berkely Parisien has hit the ground running in her new role and couldn’t be more excited to get to know her Island community. Constable Parisien hails from a small town just outside Ottawa, Russell, and policing is in her blood.
