NORTH CHANNEL—A Louisa Island anchorage and popular beach among locals was on the agenda during the April 22 meeting of Northeast Town council last week as a proposed zoning amendment sought to have the designation changed from residential to commercial for this North Channel location. He hopes to create a daytime venue for events such as weddings. Louisa Island is close to the North Shore and almost 20 kilometre from the Port of Little Current.

NORTHEAST TOWN—Residents of Little Current and Sheguiandah who utilize water and sewer services from the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands will be hit with another four percent increase in 2025. CAO Dave Williamson told council that it is “very difficult” to find ways to generate savings from the two water systems because so much of the costs are out of the municipality’s direct control. “We need to provide safe drinking water,” Mr. Williamson said simply.

NORTHEAST TOWN—The Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands will be getting a brand new fire pumper truck, hopefully by the end of the summer. At its February 20 committee of the whole meeting, council reviewed two quotes for a new pumper truck. Dependable Emergency Vehicles offered a quote for a Freightliner M2 four-door cab and chassis, 1,000-gallon tank with a DD8 6 cyl.

NORTHEAST TOWN—Since the story for 2025 Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands budget appeared in the December 23, 2024 edition of this newspaper, the municipality received a substantial increase in its Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) rates for 2025—to the tune of $10 million—significantly lowering the tax rates for the year.
