TEHKUMMAH—Citing hatred directed at Tehkummah Township acting clerk-administrator Barbara Grigg, Mayor John Deforge has suspended all council meetings until council members sign a written promise to treat all township staff, Ms. Grigg and council with dignity and respect. “The people of Tehkummah township need to know what is going on,” Mayor Deforge told The Expositor last Thursday.

GORE BAY—Gore Bay Town council has expressed its strong opposition to Manitoulin Island being included in the proposal to include the town and all of Manitoulin Island being designated as a Georgian Bay UNESCO Global Geopark. “This Geopark proposal showed up around the same time as the COVID outbreak. It’s not environmentally driven,” said Gore Bay Councillor Dan Osborne at a council meeting last week.

MANITOWANING—At a special Assiginack council meeting last week, a motion to pass this year’s budget with a nine percent increase was defeated. “I don’t like the budget, but we can’t afford to offer the same services we do with the same budget that we have,” stated Mayor Brenda Reid, at last week’s meeting. “I agree,” said Councillor Dwayne Elliott.

SPRING BAY—Annually, on the first Sunday in June, the two branches of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 514 Western Manitoulin and Branch 177 Little Current) alternate hosting the Decoration Day service, paying homage to the men and women who served in our country’s forces and those of our allies. Through their courage and sacrifice, these men and women have helped to ensure that we live in freedom and peace, while also fostering the same around the world.
