A criminal case unsealed Friday in federal court says that Haoxiang Gao, 19, a Chinese student at the University of Michigan who illegally voted in the 2024 presidential election, fled the U.S. in January to avoid felony prosecution in state court. The feds have now charged Gao in a criminal complaint with flight to avoid prosecution. The case garnered national attention and fed into the fear and conspiracy theories about large numbers of foreigners voting in the election.

The Arab American News reports that the name Mark Zarkin, owner of the popular Farmington Hills restaurant Steven Lelli’s on the Green, has surfaced in the controversy involving Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri, who has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation into possible improprieties. Zarkin is a big supporter of President Donald Trump and is known to visit Mar-a-Lago. His restaurant's clientele includes politicians, judges, high-profile attorneys and athletes.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said he would take a look at pardoning Barry Croft Jr. and Adam Fox, who were convicted in 2022 in Grand Rapids federal court of plotting to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Croft received nearly 20 years in prison, and Fox got 16 years. "It looked to me like somewhat of a railroad job," he told the media at the White House.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced last week that his office would not be retrying the murder case against Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr, noting that the jury had deadlocked with a 10–2 vote to acquit.
