A major portion of LaSalle’s ambitious $50-million waterfront redevelopment is nearing completion — and it’s set to open just in time for summer. Located along the Detroit River, the LaSalle Landing project is transforming 60 acres of shoreline into a vibrant, multi-use destination by uniting Gil Maure Park, Front Road Park and Riverdance Park. “We are weeks away from being able to fully open the park,” LaSalle Mayor Crystal Meloche told the Star.

LaSalle residents will head to the polls this fall to elect a new councillor. Town council voted Tuesday to hold a byelection to fill the seat left vacant by the passing of longtime councillor Sue Desjarlais last month. Desjarlais, who served for two decades on LaSalle town council and dedicated her life to uplifting her community, died on April 21. She had been on medical leave since the fall but was expected to return to her role.

As of Wednesday, Essex County residents can flag road-related problems with a few clicks, thanks to a new online reporting platform. The new tool allows users to submit their issues as a guest without logging in. Logged-in users can track the status of their submissions. “County of Essex residents who use our road network are important partners in helping us identify and respond to road-related issues and we appreciate your continued co-operation,” the county said in a statement.

On May 7, Ontario Superior Court Justice Ed Morgan approved the $500-million settlement with two Canadian grocery giants. The settlement includes a combined $404 million to be paid by Loblaw and George Weston. The remaining $96 million is accounted for through a gift card program Loblaw began in 2018 and ran through 2019 in hopes of making amends with customers who paid about $1.50 more per loaf of bread due to illegal price-fixing.
