While the skin is among the most commonly affected organ systems in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the role of the skin in driving disease onset remains unresolved. In their recent work, Tian et al. reported that PPARγ deficiency in keratinocytes (KCs) leads to epidermal hypersecretion of type I IFN. The resulting IFN-rich environment activates local dendritic cells (DCs), which in turn activate autoreactive T cells to precipitate SLE-like autoimmune disease [1].
