San Franciscans still have until Jan. 17 to leave their Christmas trees on the curb to ensure they are properly composted. Recology, The City’s recycling and waste-management company, will collect unadorned Christmas trees curbside on compost collection days through the middle of the month. The company said branches and tree sections smaller than 3 feet can be placed in a compost bin, while unflocked trees smaller than 6 feet should be left next to it. Trees taller than 6 feet should be cut in half.

It has been years since Tristan Warmsley was a student in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley, but she says the challenges her current counterparts face are similar. Warmsley said there has “always been community struggles, like food insecurity, housing insecurity, and gun violence” in the southeastern neighborhood. “When I was younger, gun violence was very prevalent, and so I just had to learn early on to be hyper aware of my surroundings,” she said.
