Wanda Lee Passmore, 86, passed away on August 15, 2024, at her home in Pampa. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with John Curry, officiating. She will be entombed in the Memory Gardens Mausoleum with her late husband, under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. The family will receive guests from 5:00 – 6:30 PM Monday, August 19, 2024, at the funeral home.

Kevin Berry, 77, of Pampa passed away on August 11, 2024 in Pampa. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Guadalupe Mayorga, of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. Kevin was born June 11, 1947 in New Rochella, New York. He attended Hanover Park High School.

As you venture out to Forest Preserve District of Will County trails this summer, make it a point to slow down and look around so your outing doesn’t end with an injury or worse. Forest Preserve police officers recently completed 32 hours of bike patrol training to increase the effectiveness of this patrol method. One of the goals is to get bicyclists who zoom through preserves in a reckless manner to slow down.

State Sen. Rachel Ventura’s Senate Bill 1440 has been signed into law and will go into effect Jan. 1, 2024. This law will put a stop to misleading “final notices” sent in the mail. When someone buys a car or home in Illinois, “final notice” letters regarding warranties, protection plans and insurance are often mailed out by third parties to scam recipients into providing information or buying products under the guise of maintaining their home or vehicle.

My husband and I recently went to Cary to see their new aquatic center. Wow. It is beautiful and was so busy with people of all ages. It even has a deep end with two diving boards at different heights. This pool would provide opportunities for kids to learn how to swim underwater, tread water and dive off of the side of the pool. Crystal Lake needs to get its own aquatic center.

The United Methodist Church of Plano awarded a scholarship to Plano High School graduate Libby Killilea on May 21. The scholarship was established by Pete and Betty Wolsfeld, who set aside money to be administered by the United Methodist Church of Plano. The recipient must be majoring in the agriculture or medical field and be a member of the church. Killilea is the daughter of Jim and Nancy Love.

I belong to a demographic of millions who watch a parent decline. Let's face it, after a certain age, we all somewhat decline each day, but to watch the fading of a towering figure in one's life brings a unique heartache. My father has always been stoic, wise, insightful and contemplative — a steady hand on my shoulder and those uncounted throughout his career as a Navy chaplain, (Captain) and five decades as a minister. Yet now, age and Parkinson's disease work in tandem to chip away at abilities.
