The youth judged eight classes of livestock including sheep, goats, cattle, and swine, answered questions regarding two classes, and Sr. High youth gave reasons. The contest included over 300 youth participants from over 20 different counties.

We have a few families here in Overton County that raise show pigs and their accolades are stacking up. The Burr and Holt families each had their kids participate in the recent Central Region and State Junior Swine Shows held at Hyder-Burkes Pavilion in Cookeville, TN. All three youth brought home top honors.

Adam and his grandfather, Donald Kernell, are producing organically grown vegetables right here in the heart of Overton County. Adam Clark is an Overton County native, and he started his farming venture during the COVID pandemic in 2020 when he was laid off from his job.

4-H Newsby Alyssa Anderson, UT Extension AgentFor over a decade, Mike Johnson, FFA Advisor at LA, has sent Overton County students to both 4-H and FFA competitions as often as possible. Having benefited from both programs, he seeks to impact as many youth as possible. For the first time, he sent a group of 4-H and FFA members to the Regional FFA competitions. The team scored third and moves on to state! All 4 team members placed in the top 10. Owen Johnson placed 6th. Corey Lee placed 7th.

Last fall, PSU’s theater program introduced a production called “Y/Ours: The Work of Mutual Aid in a (Lonely) Democracy.” The official web page describes it as “a play devised, performed, and designed by PSU students.” This year, the production will be devised for a second time, alongside the course titled “Devising Social Justice,” which explores topics related to social justice and its role in curating compassion and understanding within our communities.

4-H Newsby Alyssa Anderson, UT Extension AgentOverton 4-H will hold their annual Chick Chain Auction Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ag-1 Co-op in Livingston. 4-H youth raise layer breed chickens from day-old chicks to laying hens through the program. This year 15 families picked from Lavender Orpington, Black Austrolorp, and Barred Rock breeds to raise for their backyard flock. The program teaches youth responsibility, ethical decision-making, and entrepreneurship skills.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Gene Medley Rotary Agricultural Building on the Overton County Fairgrounds.
