At 8:15 a.m. Monday, Huntington Park City Council member Jonathan Sanabria was set to work his non-profit day job from home when he received an email from the city manager alerting him that ICE was coming to their city. Sanabria quickly fired off messages to other city leaders to spread the news, then said goodbye to his pregnant wife and raced out the door and into his Tesla.

It’s not uncommon to hear the clucks and crows of poultry in the early mornings across South Central Los Angeles and Southeast LA. You’d be hard pressed to find a neighborhood where there isn’t at least the sound of chickens or a rooster somewhere off in the distance. Backyard chicken farming has a long history, one that for many local families is rooted in necessity. A 2010 study on urban chicken ownership in LA County found that about 1 percent of households owned chickens.

After sunrise on Wednesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation descended on Huntington Park City Hall. Officers closed the building to the public, cordoning it off with yellow police tape that remained up until well past nightfall. A van identified by DA officer Jodie Little as a forensics vehicle was stationed in the parking lot, and uniformed officers maneuvered in and out through the rear employee entrance.
