As fires continue to burn across Los Angeles this week, locals are mobilizing to provide aid and resources to our affected neighbors. LA Mutual Aid Network has begun compiling a spreadsheet of all available resources that are being offered by organizations and individuals across the county. The list includes large and small animal shelters, and animal hauling assistance from organizations like the Compton Cowboys. The document will be continually updated here.

Under a rent stabilization ordinance approved unanimously by the Huntington Park City Council on Monday, property managers and owners will be prohibited from increasing the price of rent more than 3 percent each year. The law is set to take effect Dec. 19, after which there will be a 60-day grace period for landlords to comply with the ordinance. City council member Jonathan Sanabria, who was elected in March and had a direct hand in drafting the ordinance, said housing is his top priority.

The fight for votes in the battle over rent control in California continues to prove expensive. More than $220 million has been funneled into California’s competing ballot measures, Prop. 33 and Prop. 34, and most of that money has come from landlord interests, who have put up $157.5 million to date in a bid to thwart efforts to strengthen rent control laws in cities across the state.

In the race for fifth district seat on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, the two candidates left standing after the primary — Karla Griego and Graciela Ortiz — share similar platforms, but offer up different visions and priorities for school policing. A former special education teacher, Griego is endorsed by United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA).

Across Southeast Los Angeles, residents are feeling the pressure of rising rents and cost of living. These pressures are familiar to much of Los Angeles – but are especially acute in Southeast communities like Huntington Park, where most residents do not own their homes and which will see the opening of a new train line in the next decade. Concerns about those pressures were front and center at a community forum last month.
