The Held v. Montana ruling issued by the state Supreme Court in December played a prominent role in lawmakers’ handling of MEPA during the 69th legislative session that adjourned last week.

Two bills seeking to reallocate the recreational marijuana taxes the state collects are bound for Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte’s desk. Senate Bill 537, described by its sponsor as a “cops and conservation bill,” cleared its final legislative vote Tuesday, garnering support from three-quarters of state lawmakers. The following day, House Bill 932, which addresses only the conservation and water side of the marijuana-supported funding equation, also passed out of the Legislature.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, which manages more than 480 million acres of federal land across the country, has pledged to “implement emergency permitting procedures” to facilitate fossil fuel and critical mineral development. The department described its revised energy development directive as an effort to expedite permitting timelines so reviews that typically take several months or years can be reduced “to just weeks,” according to a press release the department issued April 23.
