(WITN) - At Monday night’s meeting, Greenville City Council members will consider a request to annex property along East 10th Street that may open more space for businesses to come in, however, there are some concerns regarding road safety in the area. Greenville City Council is looking at a request to annex property in the Mann Farm lot, near Oakdowne Way. The annexation along East 10th Street would allow the city to build commercial businesses.

    RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) - The wildfire count is out for the month of March and according to the North Carolina Forest Service, the number of fires doubled compared to last year. The N.C. Forest Service says the Spring wildfire season has been active as in March alone, their crews responded to 1,688 wildfires across the state. In March 2024, that number was 814. This high wildfire number was reached despite a state-issued burn ban that was in effect from March 21st-April 2nd.

    DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A Duplin County home is now destroyed after a fire. Saturday, just before 6:45 a.m., Duplin County emergency officials got an alert for a structure fire off U.S. 117 Highway in Rose Hill. Home destroyed following Duplin County fire(Wallace Fire Department)When fire crews arrived, they found a home fully engulfed in flames. Crews from Rose Hill, Wallace, and Teachey helped to put out the flames.

    PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Pitt County Sheriff Paula Dance has now received a certificate of appreciation from the Department of Defense. Friday, a representative from the Department of Defense presented Sheriff Dance with a certificate of appreciation for her employer support of the guard and reserve. Deputy Espino, a Lieutenant in the Army National Guard who has deployed multiple times to support national defense efforts overseas, nominated Sheriff Dance for the honor.

    BEAUFORT, N.C. (WITN/Gray News) - A bottlenose dolphin was found dead in North Carolina, and officials believe that the probable cause of death points to a plastic bag found in its stomach. On Tuesday, a very thin adult male dolphin, weighing 428 pounds, was reported on the banks of Deep Creek in the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve in Beaufort. The necropsy revealed the probable cause of death was a large plastic bag remnant, with a knot in the center, in the dolphin’s stomach.
