Short time working, reduced wages and increased food prices during the 1830s and 1840s led to widespread social unrest and the lowest paid were hit the hardest. Then, the straw which broke the camel's back came in 1842, when cotton mill owners in Lancashire and Yorkshire reduced their workers wages.

    A much-loved mum and nan died after staff at her care home failed to realise she had broken her spine, an inquest heard. Moyra Lord is believed to have suffered an unwitnessed fall at Northwood Care Home in Blackburn on July 5 last year. The injury went untreated for a month before she was admitted to hospital on August 4. Moyra, a retired cleaner who lived in the Accrington area before moving into the care home, died at Northwood, in Preston New Road, on Christmas Eve last year.
