(KFSN) -- It's Black Maternal Health Week, a national initiative to address disparities in maternal outcomes for Black women in the U.S.Valley health leaders say everyone can play a role in reducing pregnancy-related deaths. "In our country, a developed country such as the United States, it's surprising to hear that hundreds of women are still dying during childbirth and pregnancy.," said Dr. Christina Hiebert with Kaiser Permanente in Fresno.

    FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- For his whole life, Jose Meza learned to live with epilepsy. "I couldn't possibly do everything that other kids or other people had the freedom to do," he said. "I was more limited and a little more guarded as a little kid."Doing everyday tasks like going to the store or mowing the lawn was not just hard, but also scary. Meza feared that a seizure could happen at any moment. "One thing about having epilepsy is you never know when it's going to hit," he said.

    FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A trip to the doctor one summer became an eye-opener for Jasmine Kutch. "My blood pressure being a little bit higher, and it was just an eye opening," she said. "Like, I really need to make sure I take care of myself. I just made the changes right then and there."Kutch knew she had to make changes to her lifestyle -- not just for herself but also for her family. She set the goal. "I follow the 80/20 rule," she said.

    FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- "Early on, we identified that it is an underserved area in the Central Valley for sports and orthopedics, which led us to develop our Orthopedics and Sports Fellowship training program," says Dr. Richard Oravec. Since then, the Sports Medicine program at St. Agnes Medical Center has grown. Last year, the program graduated its first fellow, with another set to graduate in June. Dr. Oravec oversees the program.

    FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, digestive system and other organs. Babies are screened for it when they are born. Now, those living with the condition don't need to travel far to seek care. "It gets very difficult to travel three or four hours just to go to primary care for cystic fibrosis," says Dr. Paul Do with UCSF Fresno.
