Between late October and April, over 30 surveyors walked over 1,400 miles, the distance from Cleveland to Key West, Florida. They were compiling of Cleveland’s more than 162,000 land parcels for the Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s newest citywide property inventory, which will help the city target residential improvements and code enforcement. The surveyors walked all these miles, and recorded millions of data points, without leaving the city – or even the sidewalk.

For what may be a limited time, E. 115th Street, one of the last examples of a beautiful old University Circle residential street, will serve as a deteriorating heritage park – a museum, if you will – populated with 12 homes left empty by their owner, University Hospitals.

Too often, we check out of our democracy because it seems impossible to get things done. The ideas of regular residents hardly get prioritized, if they even get the chance to see the light of day. Clevelanders are sick of seeing our community struggle – we can no longer afford to be the poorest city in the country. People’s Budget Cleveland (PB CLE) exists as a response to these frustrations and as a new approach to democracy in our city.
