Recently I’ve noticed comments by some Cleveland Heights citizens about two important issues: the new apartment buildings going up in Cleveland Heights, and septic/storm overflows in our sewers. These comments need correcting. A complaint about the new apartment buildings is that they are for “outsiders,” and few people from outside Cleveland Heights want to move into these buildings. The thought is that Cleveland Heights shouldn’t even consider that people would move here.

A favorite saying of Jane Jacobs, author of the 1961 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, was “eyes on the street,” which is the activity taking place in city streets that keeps the movement and security of the street intact. A recent incident on the sidewalk in front of the house next door to mine has shown that my immediate area has eyes on the street.

Bob Brown and Ori at Spirit Corner near their Coventry Village home. Robert (Bob) Brown has lived in Cleveland Heights for 47 years. For the past 20, he's been a resident of the Coventry Village neighborhood with his wife, Susan Berger. They share their home with their current dog, a Labradoodle named Ori. In spring 2023, Brown self-published a 68-page photo essay he authored, Lov for Cov.

For what may be a limited time, E. 115th Street, one of the last examples of a beautiful old University Circle residential street, will serve as a deteriorating heritage park – a museum, if you will – populated with 12 homes left empty by their owner, University Hospitals.
