A new type of rocket engine, one that could power a plane from Los Angeles to Tokyo in just two hours, has eluded scientists for decades. Houston’s Venus Aerospace says it recently solved the puzzle. The company flew a rotating detonation rocket engine, a fuel-efficient machine without any moving parts, last week in New Mexico.

SpaceX has received approval to launch the world’s most powerful rocket 25 times a year from South Texas. The Federal Aviation Administration, which issues commercial launch licenses, announced Thursday that SpaceX can increase its Starship launches. It previously had permission to launch five times a year outside of Brownsville.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn introduced legislation on Tuesday that would provide $1 billion to upgrade NASA’s human spaceflight facilities in Houston. The bill, titled the Mission to Modernize Astronautic Resources for Space (MARS) Act, would provide money to the Johnson Space Center through Sept. 30, 2034, for a variety of improvements aimed at getting humans to the moon and Mars.
