New parents have a lot on their minds, including how they will afford the expenses that come along with their bundle of joy. But Kaitlyn and Jameson Farinosi of Punta Gorda got a surprise gift that will help them meet some of those costs. Fifth Third bank celebrated fifth third day on May 3 (get it? 5/3) by surprising the families of babies born that day at NCH and Cape Coral Hospital. They presented them with a gift of $1,053 to open a 529 college savings account.

The death of a sperm whale off the Venice coast this morning, while difficult even for marine experts who deal with such things, could be a learning experience for them. “Every time you see a whale in distress, like we did yesterday, it’s always really hard. It’s really hard. And so all we can do is utilize the opportunity to learn as much about them as we can,” Laura Ingleby, chief of NOAA’s Marine Mammal branch, said Monday morning, standing on the beach near the whale’s carcass.

This time last year the area was embroiled in a mystery of sorts — the vanishing of Harriet the eagle from the nest she shared with partner M15. "WHERE'S HARRIET?" was the comment of the day at the start of February 2023. The question — never answered — left eagle nest watchers flummoxed, worried, and upset. But life went on, with mate M15 taking on an expanded role and successfully helping the pair's two eaglets fledge the nest eventually.
