A play about depression. A show about suicide. And yet- somehow -it's hilarious. "Every Brilliant Thing" is playing at Calgary's Pumphouse Theatre, and while its premise might sound heavy, the experience is anything but. Presented by Verb Theatre and starring Betty Mitchell Award-winner Karen Johnson-Diamond, this one-person show is as heartwarming as it is unexpected.

Vertigo Theatre's latest production and Canadian premiere, "A Killing at La Cucina," merges human drama with technological tension in a classic whodunit - or rather, how dunnit. Introducing Lucia Dante and her AI assistant, a new hot-shot detective and her unique AI-powered sidekick; as the first grapples with loss, the latter grapples with its own identity. In an era where it is extremely faux pas to use AI to do what a human actor can, Vertigo has chosen to use a human to voice the AI character.

'Blithe Spirit' by Noel Coward is an old standard in scene study for theatre students. Coward, a British playwright whose popularity hit a zenith point in the 1950s is known for his rich use of language and specific stage directions within the script. His work can be high brow, with an advanced vocabulary and vital subtext to be played between the lines.

Porcelain Dolls is set in the ladies room at a night club populated with people you may have met before. There's the girl with a massive purse and everything you need it in. The new mom who just needs to get drunk and forget the diapers. The party girl who wants to make sure everyone is having a great time. The ex-best friend. The bachelorette. There are sink side build ups, and spilled tea breakdowns. Sounds like a party I've been to a few times. The play runs at West Village Theatre until Apr. 5.
