    A collection of illustrations showcasing the history of Stamford have been collated in a new book. Titled William Stukeley’s Stamford - Stamford in the 1730s, it has been created by a founder member of the Stamford Mercury Archive Trust. The trust owns a manuscript volume of Designs of Stanford Antiquitys which contains about 30 of William Stukeley’s original drawings. Founding member John Smith has pulled some of the pictures together in the latest publication.

    Eighteen extra nursery places will be available for preschool children from September thanks to a government grant. Malcolm Sargent Primary School in Stamford is one of 300 schools to be selected by the Department for Education for additional funding. It is part of the government’s commitment to increase funded childcare places in school based nurseries. The school said the money will create at least 18 full time places for babies and toddlers at its Acorn Childcare Centre in Empingham Road.

    A mum is campaigning for restrictions to be imposed on young drivers after her teenage son died in a high-speed crash. Jake Hankins had accepted a lift back to the NTU Brackenhurst Campus, Southwell, where he was studying, from a near stranger — who lost control of his high-powered car and smashed into an oncoming vehicle in Gonalston. Both Jake and the driver died at the scene.

    A restaurateur wants to install a glazed shelter over his outdoor seating area during the winter months. Marius Note believes the structure would create a warmer and more comfortable space for customers at Pizza Da Mario in Stamford. The restaurant opened at Sheep Market in December 2021 and has space for indoor and al fresco dining.

    Children set fire to their schoolwork as part of an immersive learning experience. Pupils from The Bluecoat School in Stanford created models of the houses in Pudding Lane which were destroyed during the Great Fire of London. They set light to the houses to help them understand why the fire spread so quickly. Luckily Stamford’s firefighters were on hand to control the blaze and share their knowledge about fire safety.
