Hey 20 Percent! Thanks to social media and the New York Times’ fascination with Berlin, very few secret tips exist here. But I stumbled into one last week that I still think about: The Lost and Found office just to the right of the old terminal at Tempelhof airport. It’s like a Kaurismaki film IRL. My son lost his wallet at the Billie Eilish concert and he got a notice that they had it, which meant I had to go get it.

Hey 20 Percent! You did it. You really, really did it. Last year a record number of you became German. 21,811 of the 20 Percent became German in 2024, an increase of 141% over 2023, according to RBB24. Congrats on battling the inefficient bureaucracy and capriciousness of the Berlin naturalization system to be able to enjoy Apfelschorle like a native and complain about your neighbors throwing glass in the glass containers (sorted by color) on a Sunday.

Hey 20 Percent!Germany’s new government is doing away with turbo-naturalizations where you could become a German after just three years in-country if you learned the language, volunteered a little bit and probably corrected more than a few people sorting their garbage wrong. Few will notice because hardly anyone except for us 20 Percenters were turbo-Germaned after the new law went into effect last June, according to Tagesschau. 382 in Berlin. 20 in Rhineland-Palatinate. 16 in Baden-Württemberg.

Hi 20 Percent, Scene at the bio bakery yesterday: Older guy and wife in beige pensioner outfits cut in front of a younger guy with long curls and Patagonia gear. “You cut in front of me,” says Patagonia Guy. “Have some decency!” says Old Guy. “Decency? You’re nothing but a fascist-Nazi. Don’t talk to me about decency. Open your eyes, look around you.” Then Patagonia Guy said some rather insulting things about Old Guy’s wife. And so on.
