Dear 20 Percent,Spring is traditionally my favorite time in Germany. Not because of the warming weather or the Spargel. Or even the cutesy strawberry stands on every corner. No, it’s because of the Jesus holidays. It seems like every other Friday is off because one-third of the holy trinity did something worth celebrating. For most of my time in Germany I got the days off but in the last few years my new sources of income actually necessitate working on those days (hello, 20percent.berlin).

Dear 20 Percent,I’ve been terrified since Friedrich Merz (CDU) was effectively elected chancellor in February that dual citizenship was about to become illegal again. Hey 20 Percent!I’ve been spending a lot of time in mid-sized German cities. Places like Lübeck and Oldenburg in the north. Limburg and Fulda further south and even Halle, Weimar and Jena eastward. And I’ve come to an uncomfortable realization — they’re very nice. Liveable, even. Sure, I’m a middle-aged white guy who speaks fluent German so I don’t stick out like other immigrants might but I can’t help but wonder if we’re not making our lives unecessarily complex by living in the Hauptstadt.
