A rest area in the Great Southern that was used as a dumping ground by travellers has been bulldozed and closed off. The closure is one of three implemented by Main Roads, which says limited resources contributed to its decision. Authorities along Western Australia's south coast are warning of serious financial penalties for roadside dumping after campers left piles of razors, rubbish and an excrement-filled toilet by a highway. A rest stop between the popular tourist towns of Albany and Denmark, about 420 kilometres south of Perth, was left in disarray after the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends. Both communities swell with tourists on holidays and long weekends, infuriating some residents.

A country policeman in Western Australia's north has described the wrangling of a nearly 2 metre monitor lizard as a "once in a blue moon" encounter. In body camera footage released of the incident, two Carnarvon police officers can be seen hoisting the hissing goanna by its tail and stowing it in the back of a paddy wagon before a crowd of onlookers.
