A proposed realignment of rail around Kalgoorlie's Super Pit gold mine and the development of an intermodal transport facility has been mooted for decades.   The project has been further complicated by the Labor government's plans to take back control of the state's rail freight network. A detailed business case was originally expected to be released last year but the feasibility study is now targeted for mid-2025.

The head of Australia's biggest gold miner has described an incident in which a worker sustained serious spinal and leg injuries as an "unacceptable breach" of its safety procedures. The price of gold has hit a record, topping $5,000 an ounce. Australia's gold mining city, Kalgoorlie, is celebrating the news but with some trepidation over how long it might last. A 30-year deal which has left one of Australia's biggest inland cities facing ongoing water shortages has sharpened Western Australia's major political parties' focus on regional water security ahead of next month's state election. Residents in the historic mining centre of Kalgoorlie-Boulder get their drinking water from a 122-year-old, 566-kilometre pipeline known as the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme.
