Ofgem calls for changes to TNUoS regime

UK energy regulator Ofgem has asked the National Energy System Operator to create a new code modification proposal to address the "uncertainty" associated with Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) charges. In a letter to the network operator, previously known as National Grid ESO, Ofgem suggested a “temporary cap and floor intervention” should be designed and brought before the Connection and Use of System Code panel in October.
High wind speeds boost UK renewables output

UK renewables generation increased by 19% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2024 to 32.8 terawatt-hours, according to government figures. The performance was attributed largely to favourable weather conditions, with higher average wind speeds of around eight knots compared to 6.9 knots a year earlier.

SPR wins consent for 65MW Hollandmey hybrid

ScottishPower Renewables has received planning consent for the 65MW Hollandmey hybrid renewables project in Scotland. The scheme will comprise ten turbines delivering 50MW of onshore wind capacity alongside a 15MW solar array and 15MW of battery energy storage capacity. It will be built 8km south-west of John O’Groats in the Highlands.
Cottam solar farm secures UK planning approval

Island Green Power has been awarded planning permission for the around 600MW Cottam solar farm in England. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband signed off on a Development Consent Order for the project today (5 September), following an application submitted in January last year. A ground mounted solar array, along with associated infrastructure and a battery energy storage system, is now cleared for construction on land at the Nottinghamshire-Lincolnshire border.
Onshore wind takes 990MW in AR6

Around 990MW of onshore wind capacity has been secured under the UK’s Allocation Round 6 (AR6) auction. A total of 21 projects were awarded the 15-year government backed contracts at a strike price of £50.90 per megawatt-hour. That clearing price came in some way below the £64/MWh bid ceiling set prior to the tender. No remote island schemes were successful in the latest Contracts for Difference auction.
Offshore wind returns in 9.6GW CfD6

Offshore wind developers have secured contracts for around 5300MW of capacity in Allocation Round 6. Nine deals for fixed bottom projects were awarded in the auction totalling 4.9GW, along with a single floating scheme. The strike price for fixed offshore wind projects was between £54.23 per megawatt-hour and £58.87/MWh – the majority being at the former level for “permitted reduction” entries.
Kuwait targets 17GW renewables fleet by 2050

Consultancy KBR has been awarded an advisory contract by Kuwait Oil Company to develop a strategy for delivering 17GW of renewable energy and 25GW of green hydrogen capacity by 2050. The company will devise a phased approach to the deployment of wind and solar generation that will be combined with power storage capabilities. Electricity will be used to produce green hydrogen, both for domestic uses and international export.
EnBW posts H124 renewables earnings decline

EnBW has reported a 35% drop in adjusted EBITDA for the for six months of 2024 in its renewable energy business segment. The figure totalled €595.8m for the six-month period, down from €912m a year earlier. The German company said the decline was due in particular to lower earnings from pumped storage as a result of falling prices. This was partly offset by the positive impact of increased earnings from run-of-river power plants and better wind conditions, EnBW said.
Plans explored for renewables rollout on royal land

The Prince of Wales is “investigating opportunities” for the development of renewable energy and storage projects across the Duchy of Cornwall estate. The move could unlock areas within the more than 52,000-hectare private estate, mostly spanning the south-west of England, for solar, onshore wind and other renewables infrastructure as part of its drive to achieve net zero emissions by 2032.
