When my daughters were pre-teens they came home from school one day alarmed. During a lesson on climate change the teacher or some part of the lesson, it was never quite clear, had basically stated that absent radical attention to warming there would be little hope for survivability on earth after 2030. This was during peak Thunberg-mania. I remember having a few thoughts. First, I'm someone deeply concerned about climate change but this isn't what the evidence shows and is a bananas lesson.

During a recent Virginia state board meeting, one of our most engaged gadflies jumped on social media to announce his departure after the public comment portion in a “now the important stuff is over” spirit. As any board member reading this knows, the work begins when public comment ends. Not that commenting is unimportant: It can provide valuable input and is an essential First Amendment activity.

The United States Secretary of Education tweeted this the other day:To get right to it: That's wrong. More importantly it's also counterproductive if we want to pay teachers more (or get people to take education policy seriously or be able to take a serious stand on using evidence or....you get the idea). We do have a teacher compensation problem, yes, but it's a lot more complicated than political rhetoric, and especially political rhetoric in 280 characters. Why is it wrong?

Earlier this year I took a look at how different ways of grantmaking – in particular project based funding – might be a contributing factor to the ongoing meltdowns at progressive organizations. And more recently a look at philanthropy and risk. In both cases, some of the most interesting responses came from people inside philanthropy – blink three times if you’re being held against your will. So I want to share a third and related observation.
