    Less than three weeks from now, Riverton Parke will be hosting high school baseball and softball sectionals — not simultaneously, although afternoon baseball and night softball on May 31 will keep the concession stand busy — and with even more hope than usual that the host teams will do well. Coach Sarah Haltom’s softball teams have already won three consecutive sectionals, only to fall to Rossville — the defending Class A state champion — in the regional each time.

    There were no spoilers Wednesday night at Sullivan (close, however). Just plenty of reminders that the Western Indiana Conference is always a dogfight in the high school diamond sports and maybe more so than usual this spring. Visiting West Vigo won the softball game between the two rivals 6-4, staying within striking distance of first-place Indian Creek, while Sullivan won the baseball game 3-1 over the Vikings to take over first place in the WIC in that sport.

    Chris Mundy had an upset stomach Tuesday prior to his Terre Haute North team’s high school softball game, and surprisingly enough it flared up again in the top of the seventh inning. For as good a year as the Patriots have been having, getting the last three outs while holding a lead has occasionally turned into a challenge. But visiting Clay City’s four-run rally fell a run short, and North prevailed 6-5 for a nonconference win.

    It was a long, hard day Saturday at Art Nehf Field for the Rose-Hulman baseball players, who added plenty of ground-crew duties to their playing responsibilities. The reward was a sweep of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader over Transylvania by scores of 4-2 and 8-7.
