Savannah police shut down Abercorn Street after pedestrian accident

Police officials in Savannah say a major road on the Southside of the Hostess City is shut down after a pedestrian was hit. In a post to X, the Savannah Police Department says Abercorn Street near Largo Drive is closed while they investigate. That's right outside the Publix and Staples.Police didn't provide any details on the victim, or their condition. WJCL 22 News has a crew on the way to the scene. This is a developing story. Wednesday, 133 cardinals cast their first ballot to choose the next leader of the Catholic Church. The history-rich tradition, called the Conclave, will ultimately result in the naming of a new pope. Much of the conclave is shrouded in secrecy because, as experts explain, the Catholic Church doesn’t view this process as just voting. Instead, it is understood as the Holy Spirit moving through the cardinals to select the leader of the church.
Guyton official under fire for alleged misuse of city funds

In March, Hamby was charged with theft by taking and financial transaction card fraud. After his arrest, we wanted to know why. We asked the city and the GBI, but neither could say. Fire damages shed at Savannah homeless shelter

Officials with the Savannah Fire Department say their crews were able to knock out a large shed fire at a homeless shelter, within minutes of arriving. The blaze broke out just before 7 p.m. Sunday at the Inner City Night Shelter on Arnold Street, near President Street.An SFD spokesperson says no one was injured in the fire, and the shelter has not been affected. Original 33 Black Georgia lawmakers honored, more than 150 years later

More than a century and a half later, the Original 33 Black legislators in Georgia are being memorialized. For far too long, says State Representative Carl Gilliard, the Original 33 have gone unnoticed. “They decided to run for office, they were Black republicans after reconstruction. They won the election, representing all the counties across Georgia and, unfortunately, in 1868 they were not allowed to serve. They were expelled because of the color of their skin,” Gilliard told WJCL 22.
Storm damage, power outages force Toombs County schools to close Monday

All Toombs County schools will be closed Monday, after storm damage and power outages forced officials to make the late-night call. The news made official by a post from the sheriff's office Sunday night around 11:30 p.m. Officials say three schools are without power so, as a precautionary measure, they are closing all district schools. It's unclear when the power will be restored, but deputies say EMC crews are already on site. The post does ask that staff report to work by 10 a.m. Monday.
Afghan refugees in Georgia face deportation, Raffensperger raises alarm

Georgia's secretary of state says he has "deep concerns" for thousands of Christian Afghan refugees who were denied an extension of their temporary protective status, after they stood by U.S. soldiers while fighting in-country. We don't just go out and buy stuff and put it in the box,” said Brandon Currin with BattlBox. What started as a way to make videos for Currin, became his full-time job.
Tybee Island shooting leaves one brother dead, the other in jail

Above video: WJCL 22 News' initial coverage of the shootingTybee Island police say a brother versus brother dispute turned deadly, after a shooting Saturday night with hundreds on the island for Orange Crush. The shooting happened around 7:45 p.m. on Lovell Avenue, near 10th Street. When officers arrived, they found Michael Gilbride lying on the ground with a single gunshot wound. Michael was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
