What's it like to manage against Manchester United? Many have experienced it; fewer have done so having already played for the club, and even less while coaching a team based on the other side of the world. The Athletic spoke to Hong Kong coach Ashley Westwood, who became a professional footballer at United in the 1990s before leaving and embarking on a career that took in spells at Crewe, Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham, among other clubs in England's top five divisions.

When you have a season as disastrous as Manchester United just did, the one silver lining is that the only way from here is up. United manager Ruben Amorim was forced to apologise to supporters for one of their worst seasons in recent memory. United ended the Premier League season in 15th place – their worst finish since relegation way back in 1974. Westwood, 48, was on United's books as a young professional. How does a Manchester lad end up coaching Hong Kong? There are always different routes. If you want to go from Manchester to London, there are different ways of doing that, and coaching is the same.

Manchester United's head of performance analysis, Paul Brand, is to leave the club. The 37-year-old has decided to depart after 12 years at United, feeling it is the right time to seek a new challenge. The Scot is well regarded within the club, who will be sad to see him go. He helped United win one Europa League, two FA Cups, and two EFL Cups during his time at Old Trafford.
