Having worked in restaurants before opening their own, Vincent Morley and Kristyn Green always hated losing tips while not getting paid consistently. So, they came up with a new idea: to pay their staff more and get rid of tips entirely. “We have done away with tips because we don’t believe that our customers should have to subsidize the wages of our employees. That’s kind of the base level of what we’re doing,” says Vincent Morley, one of the co-owners of The Bonfire restaurant in Halifax.

For many, it’s long overdue for the municipality to take action on the old Halifax Memorial Library site, which has sat vacant for 10 years. In this year’s municipal budget, $100,000 was set aside for a consultant to determine how to move forward. “This plan should have been in the works probably as soon as they decided they were going to build a new library. For residents of Ocean Breeze Village in Dartmouth, N.S., the slow destruction of the community is a tragedy. Céline Porcheron, who's lived in Ocean Breeze Village since 2017 and is the president of the Ocean Breeze Residents Association, finds it heart-wrenching to watch the community where her friends once lived get evicted and torn down. "It's just absolutely devastating," Porcheron said. "It's stressful; I spend my time at work thinking about it.
