Nagpur: Residents and shopkeepers say the Panchsheel Square bridge collapse on Saturday after torrential rain was due to negligence for decades by authorities towards regular maintenance and repair of dilapidated piers. Parts of the bridge and embankment had collapsed long time back, and the shopkeepers had lodged complaints with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), which passed them on to state’s public works department (national highway division) twice last year.

Nagpur: Survey of around 3,000 houses for assessment of actual loss caused by Saturday’s rain fury was completed by Monday evening. Remaining over 7,000 houses will be covered in the next two days. Around 40 squads formed jointly by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and district administration have started survey of 104 localities affected by floods and waterlogging.

Nagpur: The bridge between Jhansi Rani Square and Panchsheel Square on Wardha Road, a part of which collapsed during the rain fury on Saturday, will have to be torn down and built again. Traffic snarls will increase to a great extent in Sitabuldi and Dhantoli due to this. The bridge was very old and damaged to a great extent due to the Nag river running in spate a day ago.

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has not prepared any plan or executed works at Ambazari lake overflow point despite being alerted by Dam Safety Organization (DSO), Nashik, six years ago. The Swami Vivekanada Memorial, newly concretized road, and JCB machine in river bed at the overflow point were affected during the heavy rains on Saturday. The retaining wall of the memorial, cement concrete floor, lamps, tiles etc have been damaged.

In the aftermath of Saturday’s rain fury, many parts of the city took up the work of cleaning up the overflowing sewage as well as mud on roads, highly contaminated water in basements, waterlogging in open spaces etc. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis estimated loss to around 10,000 houses and assured necessary financial assistance. Collector Vipin Itankar told TOI, “District witnessed lightning and rains for one hour on Sunday.
