    Flags are at half mast today at garda stations across the country as colleagues of Garda Kevin Flatley prepare for a prayer service in his memory in Dublin this evening. Garda Flatley died after being struck by a motorcycle while he conducted speed checks on the R132 in Lanestown, close to Blake’s Cross in Lusk, on Sunday. The motorcyclist was critically ill on Monday morning at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

    The mother of one of the teenagers who drowned off the coast of Donegal was on the beach nearby as the tragedy unfolded. Matt Sibanda, aged 18, and Emmanuel Famiola, 16, died after they and a third male got into difficulties in Lough Swilly close to Ned’s Point near Buncrana at around 4pm on Saturday.

    A new computer game designed to spot the key signs of online grooming is being developed for roll-out for in-class teaching. The game is being designed under the Grosafe project in a partnership between the ISPCC and TU (Technological University) Dublin, funded by Research Ireland. It has been trialed in a small number of schools and the current phase of development is set to be completed by September.

    Two men have been arrested in connection with a suspected arson attack that left an elderly couple’s home extensively damaged in Cork last month. The men, both aged in their 30s, were detained during an operation carried out in the Dublin area on Tuesday, May 6. Detectives from Cork searched two residential properties in the capital as part of the ongoing investigation. The men are currently being held at a Garda station in Cork City under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

    A woman who was offered sex-for-rent arrangements after moving to Dublin says she hopes that new legislation will prevent other women having to go through what she did. Under the General Scheme of Criminal Law and Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2025 brought to the Cabinet by minister for justice Jim O’Callaghan, it will be an offence to offer accommodation in exchange for sex, and to advertise accommodation in exchange for sex.
