More than half (56%) of Irish people are extremely or very interested in the news, higher than the European average, with local news brands the most trusted for Irish audiences, a new report has found. According to the Digital News Report Ireland 2025, published by media regulator Coimisiún na Meán, enthusiasm for news among people in Ireland is "robust" and higher than audiences in the UK (39%), the European average (45%), and the US (51%).

Five people, including four teenagers, have been hospitalised following a two-car collision in Co Galway. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on the Tubberjarlath Road (R332) in Tuam at approximately 1.40am on Monday. The driver of one of the vehicles involved, a man in his 30s, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was subsequently taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

The Russian embassy in Ireland has accused Tánaiste and the Irish Government of spreading "anti-Russian propaganda" about recent Russian attacks in Ukraine. In a statement on Thursday morning, Simon Harris condemned "ongoing and escalating" Russian attacks on critical infrastructure in Ukraine, noting that Russia had launched more than 2,000 drone and missile attacks throughout Ukraine since the beginning of the month.

Clare athlete Chris Jeuken has won the 2025 Cork City Marathon, three weeks after winning the Limerick half marathon. The Derg AC athlete romped home in 2 hours 18 minutes and 55 seconds. He was welcomed at the finishing line by his girlfriend Olivia Gurnett, who ran the 10km marathon. He said the win is particularly special as he has only recently returned after a six-month hiatus because of an ankle injury. He plans to do the Berlin and Armagh marathons later this year.

All of the 21 show gardens showcased at this year's festival, which kicked off at Dublin's Phoenix Park from Thursday, were designed to incorporate environmental measures and with sustainability in mind.
