Christie’s is to sell a view of Venice by Canaletto which was once owned by Britain’s first prime minister, Robert Walpole, in its Old Masters evening sale on 1 July. It is estimated to make in excess of £20m. Venice, the Return of the Bucintoro on Ascension Day (1731-32) was last sold at the Paris auction house Ader Tajan in 1993, the first time it had appeared at auction in over 250 years.

Sotheby’s will sell work from the collections of two well-known dealers—Barbara Gladstone, who died last year at the age of 89, and Daniella Luxembourg—in New York this month. Gladstone, born in 1935, started her own gallery in 1980, aged 40 and twice divorced with three sons. She grew it to represent more than 70 artists and estates by the time of her death, with six premises across New York, Brussels, Los Angeles and Seoul.

A new fund managed by Art Dubai and overseen by the UAE government aims to boost the Emirate’s presence in the global art market by offering homegrown galleries a cash incentive to participate in international art fairs. The new International Art Fairs Grant was launched earlier this year by the government’s Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. Under the scheme, eligible galleries in Dubai can apply for the grant to support up to 50% of stand costs at an international art fair.

Despite the setback of Covid-19, the number of art fairs worldwide grew to a staggering 377 in 2024. The 1-54 fair, which was founded in 2013, with three editions per year—in London, New York and Marrakech—is probably the best-known fair dedicated to African art. (The fair’s name refers to the 54 countries on the African continent). Back in 2008, the first Joburg Art Fair took place with only 22 galleries in Johannesburg.

The art dealer Daniella Luxembourg will sell 15 works worth more than $30m from her personal collection in Sotheby’s contemporary art evening sale in New York next month. The group, from Luxembourg’s New York townhouse, mainly comprises works by post-war Italian artists such as Lucio Fontana, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Salvatore Scarpitta and Alberto Burri, with sculptures by the American artists Alexander Calder and Claes Oldenburg also featuring.
