The Metropolitan Museum of Art is returning a bronze griffin’s head from the seventh century BC to Greece after it was found to have been stolen from a museum there in the 1930s. The cast-bronze sculpture, which has been on display at the entrance to the Met’s Greek and Roman galleries since 1999, was previously in the collection of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Researchers in New York and Greece determined “that it illegitimately left” that museum, according to a Met announcement.

The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) announced this week it has dropped pending lawsuits with the family of Aaron De Groft, who served as the director and chief executive when the museum became embroiled in a scandal over the authenticity of works in a Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition. De Groft died last month at age 59, after a brief illness.

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain’s museum of 20th-century art, has expanded its collection with 470 new works in a demonstration of its commitment to gender balance and racial diversity. More than half of the acquisitions are by women and a significant proportion by artists from under-represented ethnic backgrounds. Many are by promising young artists whose works are yet to enter art history books.

The words “transgender” and “queer” were on Thursday removed from a National Park Service (NPS) web page about the Stonewall National Monument, a historic site in New York’s West Village dedicated to the gay rights movement. The NPS, which oversees the national monument, previously stated on this page that “before the 1960s, almost everything about living openly as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ+) person was illegal.
