    A new fund managed by Art Dubai and overseen by the UAE government aims to boost the Emirate’s presence in the global art market by offering homegrown galleries a cash incentive to participate in international art fairs. The new International Art Fairs Grant was launched earlier this year by the government’s Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. Under the scheme, eligible galleries in Dubai can apply for the grant to support up to 50% of stand costs at an international art fair.

    Leslie Roberts, the owner and founder of Miami Fine Art Gallery in Florida, has been indicted for allegedly selling forged Andy Warhols. On 9 April, agents from the FBI's Art Crime Team entered Roberts’s gallery in Miami, removing art and hauling it away in cardboard boxes, covering the windows to prevent the public from peeking in. Roberts and an associate, Carlos Miguel Rodriguez Melendez, were arrested and charged. Their arraignment is scheduled for 21 April.

    The British Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare was given carte blanche for his first major solo exhibition on the African continent. Safiotra [Hybridities] at the Fondation H in Antananarivo, Madagascar, will include several of Shonibare’s sculptures, such as Alien Woman on Flying Machine (2011) and Refugee Astronaut X (2024), as well as some of his lesser-known quilt works.

    Tax, not art, was the hottest topic at the 5 April VIP preview of the Milan art fair Miart (until 6 April). Held in the vast Allianz MiCo conference centre, the fair, now in its 29th edition, boasted 179 exhibitors from 31 countries. A number of these dealers were prominently displaying on their stands a long “Letter from artists to the government” addressed to Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni and signed by 600 artists, including established figures like Maurizio Cattelan.
